At least thirteen passengers lose their lives and ninety-eight wounded in train crash in Mexico.

A fatal train crash in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel critical opposition regarding the rapidity and execution of the country's major infrastructure initiatives.

The crash happened on the trans-isthmus railway, a route built to connect the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was created to offer an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving regional growth in the area.

“We shall thoroughly investigate the cause of this tragedy,” stated the head of state.

The leader confirmed that, of the around 250 people on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in grave condition. The president added plans to visit Oaxaca to speak with those involved.

Flagship Project of Former Government

The Interoceanic Train was a signature infrastructure project of the immediate past president, whose time in office finished the prior year. This venture was a hallmark of his administration's developmental vision for the southeastern region.

Another ambitious train initiative from that time, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the wider plan to stimulate the economy of a relatively poorer part of the country.

Project Execution and Safety Concerns

The construction of both train projects was overseen by the army, marking a dramatic expansion of its responsibilities in civilian projects. They were completed at an fast-tracked pace, defying expectations to be at least partly inaugurated before the end of that administration.

However, this rushed timetable had also fueled significant concerns over safety standards.

  • Sunday's accident was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
  • This involves an previous crash this month when a train smashed into a truck at a crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also seen a couple of non-lethal derailments.

Demands for Audit and Pause

In the aftermath of the disaster, the head of a primary political opposition called for an immediate suspension in the building and running of all such projects.

This halt was requested while awaiting a comprehensive safety audit. The party stated that the tragedy "calls for immediate answers."

In reply, the head of state asserted that the train had been operating in total compliance with all security protocols. Promises were given that the government would remain "responsible" in both the development and running of these national initiatives.
