Critical Role Season Four Reveals the Soldiers Party

Since the launch of the fourth campaign, recently appointed game master Brennan Lee Mulligan has kept fans guessing with extensive world-building, a diverse cast of characters, and a exciting storyline showcasing angels, fiends, and dark forces growing in influence within Dol-Makjar.

Note: Key plot points for the third episode of this adventure are included.

The Combat-Oriented Party Introduced

Episode 3 finished on a dramatic pause and revealed the premier party of adventurers who will split off from the primary party to begin their own adventure, distinct from the other two tables.

This warrior group features Teor (brought to life by Travis), the agile character (Laura), Tyranny (the cast member), Wicander (Sam Riegel), and Kattigan (Robbie).

The Reason for Division

Given an extensive roster, it was evident from the start that keeping everyone at one table would be impossible.

That’s why, the initial installments of this story serve as an Introduction, intertwining the characters’ stories before branching into three separate parties: Warriors, Strategists, and Questers.

What Defines the Combat Party

As described by the DM, the Soldiers table is for adventurers who enjoy a classically intense combat and conflict-driven narrative style where diplomatic options are few and far between.

Initially, figures such as the squeamish cleric Wicander might seem unsuited, but the actions of the third episode demonstrate why these particular heroes are ideally matched for the warrior group.

Motivations for Departure

To begin with, the team has a clear idea where to proceed after a intense opening clash with The Crow Keepers.

A former ally of the deceased character—whose death initiated the campaign’s events—exploited the foes for his personal gain, breaking into Thjazi’s hideout, attacking Thimble, and swiping all the magical artifacts to dispose of.

Casimir then paid off his obligations and fled to a Halovar stronghouse in the northern region, above the city, with Teor’s brother pursuing him.

Personal Motivations

Additionally, each member has a personal reason to exit Dol-Makjar:

  • Thimble, as Thjazi’s partner and best friend, seeks vengeance.
  • The adventurer has experience in the region and warns that it is a dangerous place.
  • Tyranny and The healer, having defied his family’s wishes to kill the fighter and instead rescued him, have no safe haven.
  • But, their reputation as key figures in the powerful family could help the group access areas they normally couldn’t.
  • Additionally, The grateful character swore a eternal obligation to Wicander for his deliverance and will now follow him anywhere.

Pursued by Authorities

Finally, all of them are hunted by the rulers that control the city for a multiple motives, making remaining behind too risky:

  • Thimble and Kattigan are known criminals.
  • Tyranny and The healer turned against the powerful family and the legion of demons they are partnered with.
  • Teor is targeted for elimination by the family.

This results in them little choice but to travel to the northern region in search of the antagonist.

Upcoming Developments

From episode three’s Cooldown, we find out that the warrior group will be absent in the upcoming installment, leaving the other eight players to assemble the Questers and Strategists groups.

Audiences can expect learning which characters will be assigned to which table in the story’s final introductory chapter, streaming live on the upcoming Thursday.
