The European Union might “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it calls “unwarranted” travel bans issued by the United States on five European individuals working on fighting online hate and disinformation, an EU official stated.
European Leaders Decry US Move as ‘Intimidation’
Officials from Europe including the French president accused the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, following the travel bans targeted figures that were central to campaigns to enact legislation governing US-based technology firms.
“For too long, ideologues in Europe have led coordinated campaigns to pressure US companies to suppress American viewpoints they disagree with,” wrote the US secretary of state online. “This government will not stand for such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”
Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined France in condemning the move.
The restrictions were imposed on Tuesday on an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s digital governance law, as well as four anti-disinformation campaigners, from two in Germany and two in the UK.
An Escalating Conflict Over Regulation
The DSA is seen by Washington as a type of speech restriction, while European leaders argue the regulations are necessary to combat hate speech and falsehoods.
This row risks becoming part of a far wider existing cultural and political conflict between the current US administration and Europe.
