Weather balloons transporting thousands of packs of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was forced to close for several hours when multiple of them drifted across the national airspace.
Air Travel Interruptions
The temporary shutdown led to thirty canceled flights disrupting six thousand travelers, with officials warning that additional delays could occur throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Officials confirmed that multiple atmospheric balloons were spotted infiltrating Lithuania from neighboring Belarus, with two of which ending up right above the aviation facility.
Approximately 14 of the weather balloons deployed throughout the weekend passed through the metropolitan zone, which is the location of Lithuania's capital city and adjacent to the frontier with Belarus.
Contraband Recovery
At least 11 balloons transporting 18,000 packs of contraband smoking materials have since been recovered, though this number could rise, according to law enforcement authorities.
Regional Smuggling Pattern
While creating issues, officials emphasized that "Meteorological equipment transporting smuggled items - tobacco products originating in Belarus - are not unusual in neighboring countries."
So far this year, numerous meteorological balloons have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were documented the previous year.
Cross-Border Effects
At the same time, the north-eastern Polish territory, which also borders Belarus, has recorded more than 100 cases in which illegal goods were transported from its border nation utilizing the balloons.
Smuggling Techniques
Regarding inquiries concerning why smugglers utilize a method that is especially affected by weather elements rather than easier to manage drones, officials clarified that "Atmospheric equipment are rudimentary tools used by illegal traders - they are more economical than drones for transporting cigarettes from Belarus."
Border Protection Aims
Authorities continued that "The goal of law enforcement is to seize the largest possible quantities of contraband and to detain organisers and perpetrators so that these practices become economically unsustainable and do not pose risk to passenger aircraft."
Regional Security Context
The recent incidents occur during a time of heightened tension in Europe following numerous drone incursions that have resulted in flight interruptions across European nations.
Parallel situations in adjacent nations have led European authorities to speed up talks about enhancing aerial security throughout European airspace.
