The Trump phenomenon's most revealing and defining occasions – not its most significant, nor most harsh, nor most threatening, nor most senseless, but possibly its most revealing – emerged earlier this harvest season. During the period of multiple weeks, the US president began displaying everyone his intentions for an ornate dance hall twice the size than the White House and then began solo dismantling the East Wing portion to build it.
He has committed acts ten thousand times worse – the existing assessment of fatalities resulting from his reductions to foreign assistance amounts to 600,000 and growing, and recently research predicted his energy policies would cause deaths an additional 1.3 million. Yet nothing as characteristic. No previous president would have attempted – truly, no other president would have imagined – unilaterally destroying major areas of the presidential residence to construct a Versailles-style party room, with the active collaboration of some of America's wealthiest, nearly all of which have business with public institutions.
We went from 'the gentle will obtain the planet' into 'the meek shall die to cholera'
As bewildering as it is to observe the chief executive seek to颠覆 the established notion of democracy and replace it with its direct contrary, there exists a significant segment of Americans who should not find it totally unfamiliar. This includes individuals like us – among senior generations close to half – who were raised as mainline Protestant Christians.
We have witnessed throughout the years while conservative evangelical congregations transformed the Christ we were raised with into exactly the opposite of who we understood him to be. Essentially, they transformed an image of compassion into a figure of hate who blesses precisely the cruelties that he criticized in the Gospel; this has happened more gradually, through multiple decades as opposed to months, but it is nonetheless disconcerting in the same ways, a confusing personal impact for countless people.
A Toxic Christianity Takes Hold
Therefore allow me to outline the Savior from my childhood, as conceptually the Savior is the core of Christian religion, and given that the rapidly expanding group among Americans may possess limited understanding of him since they are atheists or uncertain individuals or spiritual independents. I have no problem with any of these traditions, nor with any other faith; yet I maintain that there are pearls of substantial value in the Christian story.
It is emphatically not the narrative of an authoritative monarch appearing; conversely, an infant arrives to displaced parents in a storage space, who are forced to hastily depart to a different country to escape covert authorities. The child matures in simple surroundings, a laboring woodworker; his doctrine concerns compassion for other people, especially for the impoverished – and not a sentimental love, but a concrete one, demonstrated through nourishing and protecting. The Savior's reaction to violence is to turn the opposite cheek – not as a demonstration of submissive tolerance, but as a means to educate the assailant; his crime policy is that if a person pilfers your outer garment you must offer them your pullover as well.
The apparent and direct truth that Christ in biblical accounts requests a type of radical love focused on the needy is what has always made Christianity somewhat of a controversial faith: engaging for the masses, but due to its intrinsic extremism demanding to be controlled. In the 1950s it was contained by dilution – The Protestant faith was so prevalent that it essentially sanctified existing conditions.
A Battle for the Finest of Us
Therefore I have felt inspired to witness the persistent defiance to Trump emerge in this past year. It has served as great solace to help build the campaign that has protested openly in rally after rally, and appears to have motivated voters to show up in significant amounts during minor elections. We must have to persist with it, and through comparable resolve, featuring US banners at every demonstration and requests to the best parts in US history.
We shall be interrogated ... regarding how you welcomed the stranger? Did you receive him and receive them or not?
The country is optimally secured, to put it differently, through connection to the finest in US heritage, just as Christianity is optimally secured by reference to what makes it special and beautiful, specifically the model of the Savior. In neither case does it suggest feigning the worst of both America and Christian faith never occurred; it signifies both humility and belief, a blend that genuine American Christians should embrace.
